Bamboo, TENCEL™ Lyocell, and Baby Sleepwear
If you’ve been researching baby sleepwear, you’ve probably seen bamboo fabrics everywhere. They’re marketed as ultra-soft, breathable, and eco-friendly.
But most bamboo sleepwear is actually bamboo viscose, a type of rayon created by dissolving bamboo pulp and reconstructing it into fibres. The processing chemicals, not the plant itself, largely determine the fabric’s sustainability and performance.
So how does that compare to TENCEL™ Lyocell, the material we use in our sleepers, pyjamas, and many of our sleep bags? Let’s break it down.
Breathability & Temperature Regulation

Babies can’t regulate body temperature like adults, which is why breathable fabrics are essential for sleep.
TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres are naturally smooth and moisture-wicking, helping draw moisture away from the skin and keep babies comfortable through naps and overnight sleep. Its fibre structure also allows for excellent airflow, making it ideal for sleepwear.
Softness for Sensitive Skin
Both bamboo viscose and TENCEL™ feel soft, but TENCEL™ fibres are engineered to be extremely smooth at the microscopic level. This reduces friction, creating a gentler sleep surface — especially important for babies with sensitive skin or eczema.
Durability for Everyday Washes

Baby sleepwear goes through a lot of laundry. Sleepers, pyjamas, and sleep bags need to stay soft and maintain their shape after repeated washing.
TENCEL™ Lyocell is strong and resistant to pilling, keeping your baby’s sleepwear comfortable night after night.
How the Materials Are Made - Impact on the Environment
Both bamboo viscose and TENCEL™ start with plant-based materials, but their environmental impact is determined by processing.
- Bamboo viscose: Dissolves bamboo pulp with chemical solvents to create fibres.
- TENCEL™ Lyocell: Produced in a closed-loop system that captures and recycles over 99% of the solvent, minimizing waste and emissions.
Why We Use TENCEL™ for Baby Sleepwear
For our sleepers, pyjamas, and sleep bags, we prioritize fabrics that are:
- Soft and gentle on sensitive skin
- Breathable for comfortable sleep
- Durable through frequent washes
- Responsibly produced
TENCEL™ Lyocell delivers all of this — the comfort parents love and the environmental responsibility we stand behind.
What About Our Bamboo Products?
Some of our essentials — muslin swaddles, hooded towel sets, crib sheets, lightweight sleep bags, and quilts — are made with Tanboocel™, a bamboo-cotton muslin blend.
First, a quick note: Muslin is a weave, not a fibre. It’s a lightweight, loosely woven fabric known for its breathability and softness.
Why Tanboocel works for muslin

-
Lightweight & breathable: The open weave allows airflow — perfect for swaddles and blankets
-
Soft, gentle feel: Designed for delicate baby skin
-
Balanced blend: Combines bamboo-derived fibres with cotton for softness and structure
Thoughtfully sourced
Tanboocel is part of a newer generation of bamboo-derived materials with growing focus on traceability and responsible production, including:
-
Intertek traceability systems
-
OEKO-TEX® STEP alignment
-
FSC-certified sourcing
-
Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) initiatives
From a raw material perspective, bamboo is also a fast-growing resource that can support carbon absorption and oxygen production.
Why we use different fabrics
We use TENCEL™ Lyocell for sleepwear, where smoothness, durability, and moisture management matter most.
We use Tanboocel muslin for essentials, where breathability and softness are key.
Different fabrics. Different needs. Thoughtfully chosen.
