What parents should know about what’s actually in baby sleepwear — and why we chose TENCEL™ Lyocell.
Walk into any baby store and you’ll see sleepers and baby sleep sacks labeled “bamboo.” It sounds natural, gentle, and ideal for sensitive skin.
But here’s something most parents don’t realize:
Most bamboo fabric isn’t actually bamboo fibre.
At Loulou Lollipop, we believe parents deserve transparency about what touches their baby’s skin. Because when it comes to sleepwear, the material matters more than you might think.
What Is Bamboo Fabric, Really?
Bamboo is a plant. But according to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the fabric labeled “bamboo” is almost always bamboo viscose, a type of rayon.
This means the bamboo pulp is dissolved using chemicals like sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide, then reformed into soft fibres.
These chemicals help create the silky, soft feel bamboo fabrics are known for. But the manufacturing process can generate chemical waste and emissions if not carefully managed.
Even sustainability experts note that while bamboo grows quickly as a plant, it’s the chemical processing — not the plant itself — that determines its environmental impact.
This is why most bamboo fabrics are technically classified as rayon, not natural bamboo fibre.
That distinction isn’t always obvious from the label.
Why Fabric Processing Matters for Baby Sleepwear

When choosing sleepwear for babies and toddlers, comfort is only part of the story. The way a fabric is made affects how it performs night after night.
Parents often look for sleepwear that is:
- Soft on sensitive skin
- Breathable and temperature regulating
- Durable through frequent washing
- Made using responsible processes
Different manufacturing methods can affect how fibres perform in real life.
Why We Chose TENCEL™ Lyocell Instead of Bamboo

When we began designing our sleepers, pyjamas, and sleep sacks, softness was the starting point — not the finish line.
We were looking for something that would stay soft, breathe well through the night, and hold up to everyday life.
TENCEL™ Lyocell stood out immediately.
TENCEL™ is made from sustainably sourced wood pulp and produced using a closed-loop process that recovers and reuses more than 99% of the solvent used during manufacturing.
This process helps minimize waste and produces smooth, durable fibres designed for long-term comfort and performance.
In fact, TENCEL™ Lyocell is certified compostable and biodegradable: that means our TENCEL™ products came from nature and can return to nature when they're no longer being used.
Why Parents Love TENCEL™ Sleepwear

We use TENCEL™ across our sleepwear because it delivers the performance families need, night after night, in the following ways:
- It’s soft from the very first wear
TENCEL™ fibres have a smooth surface that feels gentle on sensitive skin.
- It’s breathable and temperature regulating
TENCEL™ helps absorb moisture and support temperature regulation, something babies aren’t great at doing on their own.
- It’s durable and long-lasting
TENCEL™ fibres are known for strength and durability compared to traditional rayon fibres, which is an absolute necessity with the amount of laundry baby and toddler parents do.
